Simone Biles’ 2021 Met Gala gown, designed by Area, was one of the most breathtaking embroidery projects I’ve ever designed. Fusion of intricate embroidery artwork and avant-garde Area’s bold and sculptural aesthetic, which was layered with incredible experiences—from collaborating with a visionary design team to the profound honor of dressing the most decorated gymnast in history. While coordinating with the design team and the atelier, I created the artwork through digital design and meticulous embroidery mapping to enhance the 88-pound, two-in-one architectural masterpiece. The gown required 6,650 hours of handwork by over 100 artisans to cover the 3D motifs with Swarovski crystals. This project showcases the fusion of innovative art and traditional technique in haute couture only to mirror Simone Biles’ strength and elegance.
